After two tearful goodbyes, I am officially a Texas Sweetheart Alumnae. I cannot believe that it has been three and a half years since I was proudly announcing that I had been selected as part of the Fall 2011 Sweetie class. One minute I was attending my freshman orientation, the next I’m a graduate of the University of Texas. As cliché as it sounds, time FLEW by. When I look back on my time at the University of Texas, my thoughts are flooded with memories- from living abroad to attending football games at home, and everything in between. I can truly say I’ve had the time of my life and, for most of my favorite memories, I have Sweethearts to thank.
“What is Texas Sweethearts?” I’ve been asked this question more times than I could count. It’s such a simple question yet, for me, it has such a complex answer. Texas Sweethearts is so much more than I could ever fully put into words. Texas Sweethearts has been my home away from home, my second family, my connection to my community, my diehard UT cheerleaders, my volunteer opportunities, my study buddies, my night out (or in) crew, and so much more than I could ever begin to explain. My time in this organization has made me a better leader and friend, and has challenged me in the most incredible ways.
It is undeniably bittersweet for me to let go of my time as an active Texas Sweetheart. Sometimes you can’t fully appreciate how much something means to you until you have to put in into words. Almost immediately, a huge lump in my throat formed as I began expressing my gratitude and love after leading my very last Sweetheart meeting. I’ve been able to witness our organization grow so much in my time as a member and I could not be more proud. Current and future Sweethearts, I leave you with this:
Make the most of the years you have. Being a Texas Sweetheart is such a privilege and you have the opportunity to make an incredible impact. Leave behind your legacy. You girls are the most inspiring and remarkable group that I have ever known and I cannot wait to hear about the incredible things your futures hold. Never forget your values as an individual, a Texas Longhorn, and as a Texas Sweetheart—the eyes of (not just) Texas are on you and I know you will continue to make us all proud. You are surrounded by all of your best friends and the largest support group of your life—take advantage of it. Stay selective but never exclusive—continue recruiting the most genuine and amazing new girls, never allowing there to be a “cookie cutter” Sweetheart. Have fun, stay classy, and above all, cherish every minute.
Sweethearts new and old, thank you for the opportunities I’ve been given and for allowing me to leave my footprint in our history. Serving as your President this semester has been the most rewarding experience and has truly been the crowning moment of my Sweethearts journey. Thank you for your unwavering support and love; it has truly meant more than you know.
I genuinely love you all and will miss you from the bottom of my heart.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
President, Fall 2014
