Letters from the Recruitment Chairs

Hey everyone! My name is Damaris Alvarado, and I am so beyond excited to be one of the Texas Sweethearts Fall 2024 recruitment chairs! I’m a junior public relations major with a business minor. I’m from Cedar Hill, Texas, and I am a spring ‘23 sweetie!

My freshman year at UT was a big adjustment from the comfort of my small high school where I had a graduating class of 62 people. I was so used to knowing everyone in the halls and in my class but that was not the case here at UT. Additionally, being a first generation college student made navigating my freshman year a bit more difficult than most. By the end of my fall semester of my freshman year I had become more comfortable with this giant campus and its 50,000+ students but it still felt like I was missing something... I was missing a community. That's when I heard about a wonderful little org called Texas Sweethearts

I began recruiting for Texas Sweethearts and couple of other spirit orgs at the start of my freshman spring semester because I wanted to make sure that the organization I joined really reflected my values and passions. Diversity was a big standard of mine while looking into organizations at UT and during my time as a recruit, Texas Sweethearts really stood out to me for that quality. I instantly knew this org was the community I had been searching for after speaking with Spring 2023's DEI Chair, Madison Wilson. After one conversation with her I could tell that this organization was invested and passionate about utilizing everyone’s individuality to build a community full of love and belonging.

This org has given me some of my closest friends. They are the people I know will be in my life forever (I would list them all but if I did I'd start rambling about how amazing each one of them are 🥹 so come find me at any recruitment event and I'll tell you about them there!). Joining Texas Sweethearts has altered the trajectory of not only my college experience but also the rest of my life for the better and I couldn't be more grateful to have found this org when I did.

If you have any questions or if you're looking for some advice please don’t be afraid to reach out to me! I can't wait to meet you all <3

Lots of love,

Damaris

Hi all! My name is Sophia Marcano and I am so thrilled to be one of Fall ‘24’s Co-Recruitment Chairs! I am a Sophomore Biochem Major on the Pre-Med track from The Woodlands, TX, and I am a Fall ‘23 sweetie!

Throughout my life, I have been lucky to be  part of extracurriculars that have given me a sense of community, but when coming into college, I decided to start fresh, yet it left me worried about finding a new place at UT. A friend of mine told me about spirit orgs the summer before my freshman year, and that’s when I started looking into Texas Sweethearts.

When I arrived at UT, I recruited and looked into a couple different spirit orgs, but Texas Sweethearts stuck out to me. Everyone I met was so warm and welcoming! I felt so comfortable talking to all the different people at the events, and truly felt like I could be myself. I knew in that moment that Sweethearts was the community I was searching for.

When I finally learned I was going to be a Fall ‘23 sweetie, Sweethearts quickly became one of the parts of my life I am most grateful for. I have had so many fun and unique experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise, I have an AMAZING fam (shoutout FamFam!) that I can depend on for anything, and I have formed friendships that I know are going to last a lifetime! I do not know where I would be in my college life today if I hadn’t found this org.

It has now been exactly a year since I recruited (boy time really flies), and my advice to you guys is to get to know as many people as possible during recruitment! I not only met so many wonderful actives, I also got to know a lot of recruits going through the same big life transitions as me, and funnily enough, they’re now my roommates!

I hope you guys have just as much fun during recruitment as I have! Please don’t be shy and reach out if you have any questions! Can’t wait to see you guys soon!

With so much love,

Sophia Marcano
