Letters from the Recruitment Chairs

Writer's picture: Texas SweetheartsTexas Sweethearts

Hey everyone!

My name is Romina Gonzalez (but feel free to call me Romi), and I use she/her pronouns. I am beyond excited to be one of the Texas Sweethearts Spring 2025 Recruitment Chairs! A few fun facts about myself: I’m a junior Environmental Engineering major with a minor in Sustainable Solutions, I’m a Spring ’24 Sweetie, and I am obsessed with hedgehogs. I was born in Monterrey, Mexico, but my family currently lives in McAllen, Texas.

I heard about Texas Sweethearts through an old member of my high school swim team who had graduated in the Fall of 2023. Initially, I was very hesitant to apply for Texas Sweethearts as I was already a sophomore in my spring semester. It wasn’t until I met my big, Regina O., at the third smoker event that I felt as if Texas Sweethearts was the right place for me! We shared many common interests as we were both engineering majors from Mexico and even in the same fluids class and lab! (talk about a coincidence, Lol). It may sound cheesy, but after just one conversation, I was convinced that Texas Sweethearts would provide me with the friendships, love, and sense of community I was longing for.

Throughout my time in Sweethearts, I have come to meet some of the kindest, hardworking, dedicated, and funniest people who have become some of my closest friends. I met my mini me, my little Roma, who brought me so much joy and laughter last recruitment semester. Likewise, the social and volunteer experiences this organization has provided me have rounded me into a better individual.

Texas Sweethearts has given me so much more than I could imagine, and all I want is for everyone to find a home within this organization that they can rely on. I remember being so nervous at the first smoker event that I left after only 20 minutes. I avoided talking to any of the officers at the smokers so I spent most of my time talking to other recruits. However, even before joining Sweethearts officially, I made great connections with other recruits at smoker events and came out of it with new friends!

If you have any questions, concerns, or are looking for pieces of advice, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any of our amazing officers! I cannot wait to meet everyone and please feel free to come up to talk to me whenever! <3

With love,

Romina Gonzalez

Hey everyone!

My name is Ashley Xu, and I use she/her pronouns. I am super excited to be one of the Texas Sweethearts

Spring 2025 Recruitment Chairs! I’m a junior Architecture and Architectural Engineering major, Spring

’24 Sweetie, and I love Big Red and thrifting. I’m also from San Antonio, Texas, and I have a dog named

Duffy!

When I started at UT, I investigated spirit organizations because I wanted to find a community beyond

just academics. Being in architecture, I felt limited socially, because I was around the same people

everyday, and although they are my closest friends, I wanted to branch out and meet people from different

majors and backgrounds at UT! In addition, I had already immersed myself in academic organizations,

and wanted to be part of something that fostered deeper connections.

I found out about Texas Sweethearts because I saw someone from my hometown in it, and I admired the

organization, so I decided to recruit Spring of 2024! I remember being disappointed that I had found out

about it after fall recruitment was over, but I think spring, personally, was the best time for me to recruit,

and I’m so happy I did. I remember going to the first info session and being so overwhelmed by the

amount of interest, so please don’t feel alone if you also experience this! I actually debated going to the

first smoker, because I was so nervous, and I’m so so glad I went. I met amazing recruits and talked to so

many cool actives as well! After talking to other recruits and meeting actives, I realized I liked

Sweethearts a lot, and they were just the community I had been looking for!

Being in Sweethearts, I have been so involved in service work. It actually has inspired me to start

volunteering at the food bank and animal shelter here in Austin! In addition, I have made amazing friends,

and been integrated into the most amazing fam, Litty Witty Fam. I love my big, Cindey, and my twin,

Krisha, and I even picked up my amazing gorgeous little Alyshbah! The social, spirit, and service of it all

has brought me wonderful memories and experiences that I cherish everyday.

I am so grateful that I applied and stepped out of my comfort zone for Texas Sweethearts. It was nerve

wracking talking to actives and officers at first, but I realized how truly genuine and nice they were, and

that made me more invested in the organization. I encourage everyone to put themselves out there, meet

other recruits, and just have fun at each recruitment event. I hope we can provide a welcoming and

inclusive presence to all, and create an environment for everyone to feel comfortable in! If I could recruit

again, I would choose Texas Sweethearts. :D

Please feel free to reach out to me or any of our officers regarding questions, concerns, or even pieces of

advice! We’d all be happy to answer them. I am so ECSTATIC to meet everyone, and please don’t be

afraid to come up to talk to me whenever! <3

With love,

Ashley Xu
